Apple has lifted Australian pricing by A$100 on both models compared with last year's iPhone 17 Pro line-up. Every storage tier is available in all four colours.

Given the starting price now sits above two thousand dollars, a good case is no longer optional. Cracked-glass repairs on a Pro model can run into the hundreds, so protecting the phone from day one is the cheapest insurance you can buy.
Release date and pre-orders in Australia
Pre-orders open on Saturday 12 September 2026 (10 pm AEST, in line with Apple's 5 am Pacific start). The phones land in Apple Stores, carriers and retailers across Australia on Friday 18 September 2026. Australia is in the first wave of more than 65 countries, so there is no waiting for a second rollout.
iOS 27 arrives as a free update on Monday 14 September, ahead of the hardware.
What's new on the iPhone 18 Pro?
A20 Pro: Apple's first 2-nanometre chip
The A20 Pro is built on a 2-nanometre process with a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU that Apple says is up to 40 per cent faster than the A19 Pro, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine – 32 cores in total, doubling the on-device AI throughput of last year's chip. A redesigned vapour chamber with three times the surface area keeps sustained performance up to 40 per cent higher under load, which matters if you shoot long 4K clips or game on the go.
Variable-aperture 48MP camera
The headline camera change is a physical variable aperture on the 48MP Fusion main camera. Six laser-cut blades open from f/1.48 for low light down to f/4 for deep depth of field, controlled by a tiny rotor. It is the first time an iPhone has offered genuine mechanical aperture control, and it comes with manual aperture, shutter speed and white balance in the Camera app, a live histogram, and new texture and grain controls in Photographic Styles. Video gains cinematic effects you can apply after capture (up to 60 fps) and 4K time-lapse in Dolby Vision HDR.
A smaller, smarter Dynamic Island
The Dynamic Island is noticeably smaller thanks to new display technology and can now show three Live Activities at once, while Face ID works exactly as before.
Connectivity and battery
Apple's own N1 chip brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, and the new C2 modem promises faster uploads with around 15 per cent lower power draw. Battery life is rated at up to 36 hours of video playback on the 18 Pro and up to 45 hours on the Pro Max (Apple's headline figures are quoted for eSIM-only models sold in some regions). Wired fast charging hits 50 per cent in roughly 15 minutes, and five minutes on the charger gives the Pro Max about seven hours of video playback.
Colours
The 2026 Pro line-up comes in Black, Silver, Glacier (a cool pale blue) and Burgundy. If you are choosing a case, clear and translucent styles let Glacier and Burgundy show through, while Black and Silver pair well with almost anything.
Does an iPhone 17 Pro case fit the iPhone 18 Pro?
This is the question we are asked most, and the short answer is: not reliably. The body dimensions are unchanged – the iPhone 18 Pro measures 150 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm and the 18 Pro Max measures 163.4 × 78 × 8.75 mm, the same as the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max – and the Action button, volume buttons, side button, Camera Control and USB-C port are all in the same places. The catch is the camera.
The new variable-aperture camera system on the iPhone 18 Pro is larger and sits taller than the one on the iPhone 17 Pro. A 17 Pro case with a low camera surround will leave the 18 Pro's lenses sitting proud of the case, which defeats the purpose of having one – the lens glass becomes the first thing to touch the table every time you put the phone down. Cases with a taller, more generous camera lip may work, but it comes down to the individual case.
Our recommendation: if you already own a 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max case, try it on your new phone. If the camera module sits flush or below the rim of the case, you are fine. If it protrudes above the rim at all, we strongly recommend buying a case designed specifically for the iPhone 18 Pro rather than risking the camera. Every case in our iPhone 18 Pro collection and iPhone 18 Pro Max collection is cut for the 2026 camera module, so the lenses sit safely inside the case. The same applies to the Pro Max: a 17 Pro Max case is not a safe assumption for an 18 Pro Max.
Buying new? Make sure it is actually an iPhone 18 Pro case
If you do not have an old case to try, be careful where you buy. Because the two phones share the same body dimensions, some sellers are simply relabelling leftover iPhone 17 Pro stock as "iPhone 18 Pro" cases. They will fit on the phone, but the camera cut-out is the old, lower design, so the new camera module sits exposed above the case – exactly the problem you bought the case to avoid. Before you order, check that the listing specifically states it was designed for the iPhone 18 Pro or 18 Pro Max, and that the product images show a deeper camera surround. iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 18 Pro Max: which one should you buy?
The two phones share the same chip, camera system, colours and storage options. The differences come down to size and stamina. The Pro Max gives you a 6.9-inch display and roughly nine extra hours of video playback, at the cost of a bigger, heavier phone that is harder to use one-handed. If you watch a lot of video, edit photos on the phone or simply hate charging, the Pro Max is the pick.
