Apple has announced the Apple Watch Series 12 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, and the headline this year is health: an all-new Health Sensing System, a daily Readiness score and a faster-charging battery. What's new in Series 12
The Health Sensing System
Series 12 gets brand-new optical and electrical heart sensors. Instead of sampling heart rate periodically, the watch now measures it every five seconds all day, and captures heart rate variability up to 24 times more often than before. That feeds two new metrics – Recovery HRV and overall HRV – and a redesigned pedometer that Apple calls its most accurate step tracking yet.
Readiness score
The most useful new feature for most people is Readiness: a 0–10 score each morning that combines your recent activity, training load, overnight vitals and sleep score into a single "how hard should I go today" number. Series 12 also tracks vitals during the day, not just overnight, so you can see how a big lunch, a late coffee or a stressful afternoon shows up in your numbers.

Battery and charging
All-day battery is rated at up to 24 hours, with outdoor workout tracking up to 10 hours – a 25 per cent improvement. Charging is 50 per cent faster: 15 minutes on the puck gives you up to 12 hours, which is enough to make "charge while you shower" a viable routine and wear the watch to bed for sleep tracking.
Audio Intelligence and watchOS 27
Series 12 introduces a group of features Apple calls Audio Intelligence: Sound Recognition alerts for doorbells and alarms, Live Rewind to replay the last 15 seconds of a conversation you missed, Siri Recap for a summary of what was said, and Shazam built in. watchOS 27 (out 14 September) adds a dynamic app grid, a one-handed tap gesture for widgets and the new Siri.
Finishes
Aluminium comes in Dark Bronze, Light Gold, Space Grey and Black, now with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front. Titanium is offered in Radiant Gold and Natural, and there is a ceramic option for the first time in years, in Pearl White and Night Blue.

Australian pricing and release date
Apple Watch Series 12 starts at A$649 for the 42mm aluminium GPS model, with the 46mm, cellular, titanium and ceramic configurations stepping up from there. Pre-orders opened on 9 September and the watch is in stores and delivering from Friday 18 September 2026, the same day as the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple is offering A$35–A$570 trade-in credit on eligible older watches.
Do my old Apple Watch bands fit Series 12?
Yes. Apple has kept the same band connector and the same two case-size families it has used since Series 10, so any band you already own carries straight over. The rule is simple:
If you buy the 42mm Series 12, it takes the same bands as the 38mm, 40mm and 41mm watches. If you buy the 46mm Series 12, it takes the same bands as the 44mm, 45mm and 49mm Ultra. Bands are not interchangeable between the two families – a 46mm band will not fit a 42mm watch.
